Morning of the Earth Live in Sydney
The magical locations, the beyond-epic waves, the leashless single fin boards, the dancing transition-era style of riders like Lopez, Young, Peterson, the spiritual consciousness that creeps out from between the frames and embedded in the soulful original songs and yearning captured in brilliant guitar playing.
That alone would make the film a classic. However, filmmaker Albee Fazon even transcends this, by framing his work as a kind of love poem to the Earth that also manages to ask important questions about life and human values.
Playing this weekend in a restored print and some of the original musicians on hand to perform the songs live.
Thanks to Damion Fuller at Board Collector for the tip, and to Justin for turning me on to the film. Feeling the pain to be here in NYC.

Come Hell or High Water - Premiere at NY Surf Film Festival
Ain't nothin' better than watching a surf film at a theater so you can hoot and holler in unison...
Keith Malloy admitted in the Q and A after the film that he and his crew had just finished the film 3 days ago and had still been out shooting two weeks earlier. That only made me appreciate this ode to bodysurfing that much more. Touching, humorous with jaw dropping drops, paired with great songs, it was a complete surf movie experience.
The underwater footage was mesmerizing, waves breaking with white bubbly fog engulfing grinning aqua men. My favorite shot was when several surfers were lined up underwater moving with the energy of the wave like a school of fish. It's an image I will store in the noggin' for sometime until age and seawater wipe it out.
As a group bodysurfers are literally the lowest in the surfing hiearchy but that actually makes them closest to the water and there is something to that. They're keeping it simple and they know that having fun is all that really matters.
See. This. Movie.

Seal Cam
This video caught my eye. Sure it's amusing to watch life from a seal's point of view, but watch how this being navigates space. The notion of "upside down" gets exposed as a kind of conceptual prison of surface dwellers. Sweet liberation!

Jack Johnson - You And Your Heart
Wonder how Jack lipsyncs this - waterproofed iPod & speakers, clipped to the deck? Not easy singing double speed (you'll notice the clip is slo mo), but paddling into a wave at the same time? The guy deserves an award!

Last Hope at the New York Surf Film Festival
This post is long overdue but I was on the move. A few of us took in a screening of Andrew Kidman's Last Hope. The film is a collection of 16 shorts that portray our connection to the water. As children, as seventies aussie surfers, as northeast winter surfers, as defenders of the past, as outsiders. Kidman and band played during some of the shorts and obviously the live sound gave it that "Oomph" that only a live performance gives. If I could decree something it would be that all surf films need to be accompanied by live music. What better way than to get transported, elevated into that celluloid tube ride...

Le Grand Bleu
I need to watch this movie again. I've probably watched it three or four times already. It was my first introduction to Luc Besson's work and it's the best movie Rosana Arquette has ever done which isn't praise for her, just her luck. Also the first time I saw the acting chops of Jean Reno and Jean-Marc Barr.

New York Surf Film Festival Sept. 25-27th
Get yours while it's here!
click here for schedule and tickets.
Lots of good stuff, where do I put my money down? I think I'm in the mood for some Bonnie Prince Billy and surf footage on the big screen. White Wash for an interesting rarely mentioned part of surf history and Inner Most Limits of Pure Fun for some good old fashioned take me back to the time before I was born nostalgia. haha.
